I found out about this book doing a search on the Internet after reading "On The Banks of Plum Creek" by Laura Ingalls| |"A well-written and clearly organized account of the grasshopper plagues in Minnesota and the generally ineffective measures of public relief in response to them....An important contribution to the literature on rural life and on social welfare in America."

Atkins eloquently portrays the extreme hardships of Minnesota farmers during the grasshopper plagues of the 1870s. She examines local, state, and national relief efforts, which she reviews in the context of nineteenth-century social welfare philosophy.
